Are You A Pet Owner Concerned About Over/Under Vaccination?

dogs2bAntibody titre (blood) testing is now available for major viral diseases in dogs. We recognise that some clients may prefer to check on their pets disease antibody status, before vaccination for distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus.

The World Veterinary Vaccine Guideline Group has recommended a three year interval for the core viral diseases vaccinations from 12-15 months for all dogs to ensure adequate coverage. They recognise that a reasonable percentage of dogs will still have protective antibody levels for perhaps many years .

Cockatoo Shot with Slug Gun

Cockatoo_BOne of the treasured Wildlife ARC carers recently presented an adult cockatoo unable to fly as found on the ground. It had some swelling around its right shoulder joint but no fractures were palpated, and there were no obvious wounds or skin punctures. cockatoo_xray

Radiographs were obtained after cocky was quickly put under a gaseous anaesthetic. To our surprise a slug gun pellet was found embedded deeply near the joint. It was elected to let the swelling subside and consider surgery a few days later to remove the slug. Lead poisoning was deemed a low risk as it occurs more with ingested lead subject to acid digestion.

Orthopaedic Surgery at EHVH

WedgePS1 cruciate-xray1 cruciate-ligament-postop

‘OssAbility Titanium Wedge’ … This ‘OssAbility’ version of the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) is now our preferred method of surgical repair of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament.

In orthopaedics; this is a 3D printed titanium mesh wedge developed by a NZ bioengineer. It is used to fill the gap made when the tibial tuberosity is advanced in neutralizing thrust forces in a knee with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. It means two less screws than the former variant of this cruciate surgery as it has a high ‘drag’ coefficient; & attracts new bone growth. We offer the ‘OssAbility’ titanium wedge system as an advance on the previous cage system as a bone graft is not required and a more precise & predictive bone cut can be performed.

Myths Surrounding Ear Disease!

dog-earsTRUE or FALSE?

Plucking a hair from “hairy eared dogs” is beneficial!…FALSE

Why? This common ritual is no longer advised. If the ears are ‘normal’ leave them alone. If the ears have continual problems then plucking will incite inflammation to the empty follicles allowing bugs to take hold.

Most ear disease is caused by infection!…FALSE

Toxic Plant Identified by Erina Heights Vets

ruby‘World first recorded’ – Erina Heights Vet Hospital identified the toxicity of this plant in a dog. The moth plant (‘false choko’) has been infrequently recorded as being toxic to poultry and cattle; but this is the first recorded case in a dog of which we are aware.

Ruby is usually a happy and active young Bernese Mountain dog and always keen on her dinner. So when Ruby suddenly declined her food her owners were very concerned. false chokoShe was reluctant to move, and had a very stiff gait. Pain relief medication gave mild respite; but over the next 2-3 days she began to show signs of a very painful abdomen.

What Kind of Bones?

pic10Erina Heights Vet Hospital recommends feeding RAW bone such as fresh lamb or beef necks that are cut lengthways; not only are they great for your pets dental health; they are also more digestible than their dried counterparts and have a higher moisture content.

Under no circumstances should any leg bone of beef, sheep or pork be fed to dogs – these bones are more compact & are harder to digest & will potentially crack the crowns of teeth.

The take home message is to seek out the long cut sheep necks & feed perhaps every other day in combination with a good quality dry kibble. The addition of a small amount of omega 3 oil (plant +/- fish based) is a bonus. the easy dose product “Megaderm” is ideal.
